Locum Consultant in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecology at St James Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds. The post will be available immediately for a period of 6 months with extension to 12 months upon satisfactory review subject to service requirements.

This is a new post and has been developed to address an increase in demand for the service. We want to encourage the successful candidate to develop a specialist interest within their job plan, supported by the wider Obstetric and Gynaecology team, following discussion with the department.

The successful applicant should be a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (MRCOG) and they should be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Candidates not yet on the Specialist Register (including those awaiting CESR outcome) may be considered for appointment to Locum Consultant post, subject to demonstrated competence and appropriate governance arrangements.

Applicants should have established skills in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with ability to work within a busy tertiary unit. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

Job Summary

This is a 10 PA Locum appointment for a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Obstetrics and Gynaecology teams across Leeds General Infirmary and St James University Hospital.

This post has arisen as part of the expansion of Consultant staffing within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Women's clinical services unit (CSU)


Why you should join our Team

The Gynaecology service is predominantly based at St James University Hospital, with some elective Gynaecology work including clinics, day case and overnight theatre and hysteroscopy also takes place at Wharfdale Hospital. Leeds has just been made an Endometriosis centre and there are specialist clinics also in Premature ovarian failure, paediatric and adolescent gynaecology, Complex termination of pregnancy, ambulatory procedures and a PMDD MDT amongst other opportunities.

The Fertility service is based at Seacroft Hospital.

The Maternity Service is based at St James Hospital (approximately 4,500 deliveries per year) and Leeds General Infirmary (approximately 5,200 deliveries per year). Leeds Maternity services provide tertiary level care for Fetal medicine and Maternal Medicine. There are a number of specialist antenatal clinics and exciting opportunities to engage with ongoing Quality Improvement work.

What you will bring to the role

To deliver Obstetrics and Gynaecology care to patients at the Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust including:

    • Antenatal out-patient clinics
    • Elective Caesarean section lists
    • Gynaecology clinics
    • Obstetric and Gynaecology Ambulatory areas, including postnatal ward review.
    • Care of in-patients on an Obstetric hot week rota (1 in 11)
    • Contribute to Obstetric on call rota
    • Contribute to multi-disciplinary team meetings, including perinatal morbidity and mortality reviews, audit and teaching.
    • To deliver 0.5-1PAs clinical care reflecting the interests of the successful candidate, to include mentoring and support provided from within the department. Areas of potential interest may include: Colposcopy, Vulval clinic/Vulvoscopy, Diabetes clinic, High Risk Obstetrics, Ambulatory Gynaecology or other interest the individual may have which the team can support.
