Job Summary

We are seeking an outstanding, compassionate and delivery-focused senior leader to join Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust as General Manager for the Urgent Care Clinical Service Unit (CSU). Working in partnership with the Clinical Director and Head of Nursing, you will provide visible leadership across a complex, fast-paced portfolio and shape the delivery of safe, high-quality and responsive urgent and emergency care.

The CSU includes three Emergency Departments, including the Children’s Emergency Department, across the Trust’s two main hospital sites; same day emergency care for medical and older people; two acute medicine wards; and a Primary Care Access Line providing rapid clinical advice to partners across Leeds.

You will lead operational delivery, performance, quality, workforce and financial management for the CSU, translating Trust strategy and values into clear priorities for teams. You will need the judgement to make timely, balanced decisions, the credibility to influence at senior level and the ability to build effective partnerships across clinical, corporate, primary care and system services.

Why you should join our Team

The General Manager is a key member of the CSU leadership team and will be accountable for delivering safe, effective and timely services within available resources. The postholder will lead a senior management team, including Service Managers and Business Managers, and will:

  • provide visible, inclusive leadership to multidisciplinary teams across sites;
  • deliver national and local urgent and emergency care standards, operational plans and agreed performance trajectories;
  • ensure robust governance, risk management, patient safety and continuous improvement;
  • lead demand, capacity, workforce and financial planning, including delivery of efficiency requirements;
  • drive service transformation, pathway redesign, digital innovation and implementation of the Leeds Improvement Method;
  • develop business cases, contracting arrangements and plans that support the CSU’s strategic priorities and the Trust’s annual commitments;
  • work with partners across Leeds to improve access, flow, outcomes and patient experience; and
  • support the Clinical Director and Head of Nursing in setting the CSU’s strategic direction and management priorities.

What you will bring to the role

You should hold a postgraduate qualification or equivalent senior management experience within urgent and emergency care, supported by evidence of continuing professional development.

Have substantial recent operational management experience in a large, complex acute healthcare organisation, ideally including urgent or unplanned care.

Proven success in leading multidisciplinary teams across sites and delivering safe, high-quality services, performance standards and complex change.

Strong strategic, programme and project management skills, with experience of workforce planning and managing significant, complex budgets.

Highly developed analytical, digital, influencing, negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to use data and business intelligence to drive improvement.

Sound knowledge of the NHS, current policy and urgent and emergency care priorities.

A resilient, inclusive and politically astute leadership style, with the ability to manage competing priorities, work under pressure and build effective partnerships.
