Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Higher Biomedical Support Worker to join the Cellular Pathology Department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This full‑time, fixed term role sits within one of the largest and most progressive pathology services in the UK, supporting the delivery of high‑quality diagnostic services across multiple specialist areas.

Based within Cellular Pathology, the role is integral to the routine and complex laboratory workflows that underpin patient diagnosis and care. The role involves working with human tissue samples, bodily fluids and laboratory chemicals.

We are looking for an individual with previous laboratory experience, excellent attention to detail, strong organisational skills, and the ability to work flexibly in a fast‑paced environment. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys teamwork, is keen to develop their skills, and wants to be part of a forward‑thinking, innovative department. You will be expected to undergo some “in house” training to attain competence within the laboratory.

The department operates Monday to Saturday 7:30 to 7:30 with standard day and extended day shifts.

Why you should join our Team

Cellular Pathology at LTHT is a large, diverse and welcoming department, bringing together biomedical support workers, biomedical scientists, advanced practitioners, anatomical pathology technicians, pathologists, and administrative teams. We process approximately 60,000 surgical cases per year, alongside non‑cervical cytology, andrology, autopsy, molecular, and specialist pathology services, offering a varied and stimulating working environment.

What makes our team special is our commitment to innovation, training, and continuous improvement. We were the first department in the UK to introduce fully automated sectioning and make extensive use of digital pathology and advanced processing technologies. As an IBMS‑accredited training laboratory, we actively support staff development and encourage involvement in service improvement, transformation, and new ways of working. If you want to grow your skills while contributing to excellent patient care and living the values of The Leeds Way, we would love to hear from you.

What you will bring to the role

You will work as a member of the departmental team, collecting, receiving and assisting in the processing of clinical diagnostic cellular pathology specimens for testing. You will have:

 Experience working in a laboratory or diagnostic environment

 Ability to perform routine and more complex laboratory tasks, sometimes under supervision

 Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accuracy and quality

 Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet tight deadlines

 Effective communication skills and a flexible approach to work

 Willingness to undertake in‑house training to achieve laboratory competency

 Ability to work independently and as part of a large multidisciplinary team

 Enthusiasm for contributing to a high‑quality, patient‑focused service

Within the team you may be required to organise the tasks of support workers and demonstrate relevant job related tasks to new or more junior staff.

You will contribute to general departmental management, for instance, by assisting in the ordering, receipt and control of consumables.
