Job Summary

This one year Resident Optometrist post will give the successful applicant an opportunity to develop the core optometry skills of refraction (adult and paediatric), contact lenses, low vision assessment, dispensing and keratoconus monitoring, as well as the opportunity to learn new skills within supported enhanced optometry/ophthalmology clinics such a glaucoma, medical retina, acute referral and corneal clinics.

The Ophthalmology Department is part of the Head and Neck clinical service unit within the Trust. The role will be based primarily at St James's University Hospital but may require travel to other Trust sites.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, GOC registered optometrist who is keen to pursue a career within secondary care optometry and who preferably has recent experience of working in core optometry clinics within a hospital setting.

Why you should join our Team

The Optometry service is part of a major Ophthalmology Department within one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in the NHS. The team delivers highly specialised core and enhanced Optometry patient services across paediatric and adult pathways, supports tertiary work, contributes to teaching and clinical research, and plays an important part in wider service development across Ophthalmology. This is a large enthusiastic team of 18 optometrists, a dispensing optician manager and optometry administration staff, with a strong professional identity, a broad clinical scope in core and enhanced services, and a clear commitment to evidence-based practice, education and continuous improvement and development.

You will work alongside all the optometry team and also with ophthalmology, orthoptic, nursing and imaging colleagues. It is an excellent opportunity for a keen optometrist who aspires to work within a secondary care setting.

What you will bring to the role

To assist in the delivery of a broad range of core optometric services to the highest standards of quality and care including refraction, contact lenses, low vision, dispensing and keratoconus monitoring.

To develop skills in enhanced clinics such as corneal, glaucoma, acute referral and medical retina with support from senior colleagues.

To undertake delegated administrative responsibilities as determined by the Head of Optometry or senior colleagues.
