Applications are invited for Senior Fellow posts in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Six-month fellowships are available, tailored to individual training needs, after which fellows will undertake other service duties according to service requirements. Posts are available from February 2027, with flexible start dates by mutual agreement.
Fellowships can be tailored to meet the training needs of the individual and include:
- Upper limb (Major nerve, congenital hand, adult hand, trauma)
- Upper limb transplant
- Head and Neck
- Breast Micro
- Sarcoma and Lower Limb
- Skin Oncology
Routine duties include patient care at Leeds General Infirmary and attendance at theatre lists and outpatient clinics. The successful candidate should clearly define their subspecialty training needs at the outset and discuss how these will be met with their supervising consultant.
The post is full-time and requires advanced training in plastic surgery and completion of the FRCS (Plast) or an equivalent qualification.
The department provides specialist plastic and reconstructive surgery across a wide range of areas: comprehensive hand and upper limb surgery, including congenital hand, adult hand and brachial plexus surgery; hand transplantation; head and neck malignancy; cleft and craniofacial surgery; sarcoma; breast reconstruction; skin cancer; and lower limb reconstruction. Leeds is a Major Trauma Centre. Trainees and fellows contribute to the unit’s busy microvascular service.
The Leeds Hospitals provide comprehensive health care to the City of Leeds with a population of over 860,000. A number of Regional and Sub-Regional Services are also provided from hospitals within the area. There are two major teaching hospitals in Leeds, the Leeds General Infirmary and St. James's University Hospital.
The Leeds Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery unit is based at the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) with some facilities at St. James's University Teaching Hospital (SJUH), Chapel Allerton Hospital (CAH) and Wharfedale General Hospital (WGH).
The Plastic Surgery Unit provides a national hand transplant service and regional congenital hand service as well as a brachial plexus injury service.
Both the LGI and SJUH have busy Emergency Departments and general Plastic Surgery emergencies are referred to the Unit. The Unit takes Major Trauma Centre patients, and acute hand emergencies amongst many other cases. Trauma cases are treated as combined procedures with the Orthopaedic Surgeons. The Leeds General Infirmary has been awarded the status of being a Major Trauma Centre. This has had a dramatic increase in the number of complex lower limb injuries requiring microsurgical free tissue transfer being referred to the unit. There is a dedicated major trauma ward and a major trauma operating theatre.
The successful candidate is expected to hold FRCS(Plast) or equivalent and to be either an experienced trainee in Plastic Surgery or an accredited Plastic Surgeon eligible to take a Consultant post in the United Kingdom or overseas. The appointee will be expected to have appropriate plastic surgery skills and to develop these fully during the Fellowship. The fellow will also be expected to attend and contribute to the teaching programme and departmental audit meetings.
